A little regular care goes a long way with a static caravan. It keeps your holiday home comfortable and safe, helps it last longer and makes it easier to sell if you ever decide to move on. Here’s a simple checklist to follow through the year.
Every visit
- Open windows and let fresh air through to reduce condensation.
- Check for any signs of damp, leaks or musty smells.
- Run taps briefly and check for drips.
- Make sure smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are working.
- Leave the home clean and tidy, with no food left in cupboards.
Outside
- Wash the exterior once or twice a year with a caravan-safe cleaner to stop green algae building up.
- Clear gutters and roof edges of leaves and moss.
- Check seals around windows and doors and re-seal where needed.
- Look after the decking – sweep regularly, check for loose boards and treat timber as recommended.
- Check the underside for anything that looks damaged or loose, and keep vents clear.
Gas and electrics
Have your gas appliances safety-checked every year by a qualified engineer, and keep certificates somewhere safe. Never block ventilation. If anything electrical stops working properly, ask a qualified electrician – many parks can recommend approved contractors.
Preparing for winter
If your park closes for part of the year, or you won’t be visiting for a while in cold weather, winterising helps prevent burst pipes:
- Drain down the water system, including the boiler if advised.
- Leave taps open and plugs out.
- Prop open cupboard doors and lift cushions to let air circulate.
- Consider moisture traps or a dehumidifier to keep damp at bay.
- Switch off the gas and electricity as advised by the park.
Many parks offer a drain-down service – it’s worth asking.
Waking it up in spring
When you return after the winter, refill the system slowly and check for leaks, air the home thoroughly and give it a good clean. It’s also a good time to book the annual gas check.
Insurance
Keep your insurance up to date and check what it covers, especially for storm, flood and winter damage. Some policies require the home to be drained down in winter.
